In the late hours of September 3, 2022, the life of 23-year-old Nikolas Todd Bird, a White male from Idaho Falls, Idaho, was tragically cut short. On a street called Clair View Lane, Bird was shot multiple times and was discovered lying in the road after a full-size truck was seen leaving the area. Emergency services transported him to a local medical center, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The events leading to his death stemmed from a dispute connected to
a local car club he had founded. The suspect, 41-year-old Mark Bent, had been a member of the "Castaways Car Club" but left due to disagreements and what he described as illegal activities by other members. Following his departure, Bent claimed he was the subject of online harassment and rumors, allegedly initiated by Bird, suggesting he was an undercover police officer. Bent asserted that his personal information, including his address and workplace, was shared online, leading to threats against him.
On the night of the shooting, Bent drove from his home in Pocatello to Idaho Falls. He located Bird's neighborhood and, after some time, vandalized Bird's vehicle by breaking a side mirror. When Bird came out to inspect the damage, Bent confronted him and shot him multiple times. Shortly after the incident, Bent took to Facebook and posted a confession, stating that his "main goal was to kill Nik Bird" and that he had "committed some serious crimes today that will put me in jail for the rest of my life."
Following the social media post, Bent called 911 to turn himself in, informing the dispatcher that he had shot someone and revealing his location at a nearby grocery store parking lot. Idaho Falls Police officers responded and arrested him without incident. A handgun was found in his truck that matched the shell casings recovered at the scene of the shooting. Bent was charged with first-degree murder. During his trial, he claimed to have "blacked out" during the shooting itself. In December 2024, a jury found Mark Bent guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison for the killing of Nikolas Bird.
