Stephen Arkell, a 48-year-old police officer with the Brentwood Police Department in New Hampshire, was tragically killed in the line of duty on May 12, 2014. He was responding to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Mill Pond Road when he was shot and killed by Michael Nolan, the son of the homeowner.
Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Arkell was invited inside the home by Walter Nolan, Michael's 86-year-old father.
Shortly after entering, Officer Arkell was met with gunfire from an elevated position within the house. He was fatally wounded and died at the scene.
Following the shooting, a massive explosion and fire erupted, completely destroying the home. It is believed that Michael Nolan intentionally set fires and ruptured gas lines, causing the explosion that ultimately took his own life.
Officer Arkell was a beloved member of the Brentwood community and his death sent shockwaves through the town and beyond. He was remembered for his dedication to service, his friendly demeanor, and his commitment to keeping his community safe. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
