In the spring of 2022, a quiet community in Concord, New Hampshire, was unsettled by the disappearance of a recently retired couple. Stephen Reid, a 67-year-old Caucasian male, and his wife, Djeswende, vanished after leaving their apartment on the afternoon of April 18th for a walk on the nearby Broken Ground Trails. Concern mounted when Stephen failed to appear for a planned event two days later, prompting a relative to report them missing.
Their cars remained in their usual parking spots, and all communication with them had ceased. The search culminated in a grim discovery on April 21, when their bodies were found in a wooded area near the trails. Both had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and their deaths were ruled homicides. Their bodies had been moved from the trail and concealed with leaves and other debris.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a transient man who had been living in a tent in the woods near the crime scene. This individual initially provided a false name, "Arthur Kelly," to police when questioned during the missing persons search. As the investigation progressed, this man, later identified as 26-year-old Logan Clegg, became a person of interest. Investigators found that after the murders, Clegg burned his tent, deleted information from his computer, and purchased a bus ticket out of Concord. The methodical efforts of law enforcement eventually connected shell casings found at Clegg's campsite to those discovered at the murder scene.
Six months after the murders, in October 2022, Logan Clegg was arrested in South Burlington, Vermont. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of a one-way plane ticket to Germany, a fraudulent passport, and a handgun. Clegg was charged with two counts of second-degree murder for knowingly causing the deaths of Stephen and Djeswende Reid. He was also charged with multiple counts of falsifying physical evidence and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Logan Clegg's trial took place in the fall of 2023. Prosecutors presented a case built on circumstantial evidence, highlighting Clegg's deceptive behavior, his flight from New Hampshire, and the ballistics evidence linking his gun to the crime. The defense argued that the authorities had targeted the wrong person and that the evidence was not conclusive. After a trial that spanned several weeks, the jury found Logan Clegg guilty on all charges, including four counts of second-degree murder.
