Rick Vreeland, a 53-year-old resident of Brownington, Vermont, was shot and killed on May 25, 2015. The incident occurred at the home of Jeffrey Ray, who was the ex-husband of Vreeland's wife.

Ray was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea to guilty of second-degree murder as part of a plea deal.
