On a tragic Memorial Day in 2015, the life of 53-year-old Rick Vreeland, a Caucasian male, was cut short in the town of Brownington, Vermont. On May 25th, Vreeland was shot and killed by Jeffrey Ray, the 51-year-old ex-husband of his wife. The violent encounter unfolded in the driveway of Ray's daughter's home, a place that should have been a setting for family connection, not a scene of bloodshed.
The fatal confrontation was witnessed by a young man who was tragically caught in the
middle: Ray's own son, who was also Vreeland's stepson. The young man had followed his stepfather to his father's residence that day, only to witness the slaying. Following the shooting, a struggle ensued between the father and son as the younger man tried to disarm his father.
Jeffrey Ray was taken into custody and initially charged with first-degree murder. At the time of the incident, it was reported that he was highly intoxicated. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charge and was held without bail. For nearly three years, the case moved through the legal system as Ray awaited trial.
In January 2018, just as his trial was set to begin, Jeffrey Ray entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder. The defense never disputed the fact that Ray had shot Vreeland. Following his guilty plea, Ray was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. The Vermont Supreme Court later upheld this sentence in August 2019, bringing a legal conclusion to the violent death of Rick Vreeland.
