On the night of May 12, 2023, a quiet road in Brookfield, Vermont, became the scene of a fatal encounter. A Hispanic male, 27-year-old Juan Sierra of Springfield, Massachusetts, was shot and killed outside a residence on Route 14. His death, later ruled a homicide by the Chief Medical Examiner's Office, was caused by a gunshot wound to the torso. Sierra was not alone that night; he had traveled to Vermont with his friend, 29-year-old Miguel Fuentes, also from Springfield.
The two men were together outside the Brookfield home when the shooting occurred.
While Sierra succumbed to his injuries at the scene, Fuentes, despite being shot, managed to escape in a vehicle. He drove for several miles before a passerby found him and called for help. Fuentes was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and survived. The investigation that followed revealed the shooting was not a random act of violence. Vermont State Police determined the incident was drug-related, alleging that Sierra and Fuentes had come to the Brookfield residence to sell drugs. It was also reported that both men had previous arrests for fentanyl trafficking in 2019.
The investigation soon zeroed in on a suspect: 43-year-old Devon Dennis of Hartford, Connecticut. In a clear attempt to evade law enforcement, Dennis boarded a flight to Jamaica from an airport in Connecticut on May 13, the day after the deadly shooting. His time as a fugitive was limited. Authorities tracked his return, and when his flight from Jamaica landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, a team of law enforcement officers was waiting. Members of Homeland Security Investigations, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the NYPD, the U.S. Marshals Service, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehended him at the airport. Following his arrest, Dennis was jailed pending extradition to Vermont, where he faces charges of second-degree murder for the death of Juan Sierra and attempted second-degree murder for the shooting of Miguel Fuentes.
