On May 24, 2014, the life of 10-year-old White male, Logan Allan Cookson, of Cabot, Vermont, was tragically cut short. Born on May 11, 2004, in Berlin, Logan was the youngest child of Scott and Tammy Cookson. He had previously lived in East Barre and attended Central Vermont Catholic School before moving to Cabot and enrolling in Cabot School for the last two years of his life.
Those who knew him remember a boy with a memorable and impactful life, despite its brevity.
Logan was described as a country boy at heart who loved exploring the woods, hunting, and camping. He enjoyed activities like mowing the lawn and stacking wood with his father. He had a curious nature and was always looking for something to fix or take apart. His interests also included basketball, soccer, hockey, and chess. He was particularly proud of having passed the hunter safety course. Logan was very close to his brother, Brock, with whom he was inseparable, and they shared a love for animals, farming, and playing outside. He was also known for his passion for planning parties and would often call family and friends to arrange get-togethers.
Initially, reports surrounding Logan's death suggested an accidental gunshot wound. However, the investigation into his death, which occurred at his family's home on Garfield Road, later revealed it to be a homicide. Suspicion fell upon his father, Scott Cookson.
Scott Cookson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with his son's death. He was accused of intentionally shooting Logan in the head with a rifle. In 2015, Scott Cookson pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in his son's death, bringing a resolution to a case that deeply affected the small community.
