On a tragic Halloween afternoon in 2016, Matthew Reverdes, a 29-year-old Hispanic male from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, was fatally shot in his basement apartment. The incident was the culmination of an escalating dispute with his upstairs neighbors. Reverdes was known by his loved ones as a generous and hardworking individual with a strong work ethic from a young age.
The conflict began with his neighbors, Trearra Hudgen and Julio Cano, who lived in the same multi-dwelling house.
Tensions had been rising, with the neighbors reporting that Reverdes had been knocking on their window late at night, an accusation he denied. On October 31, 2016, this ongoing animosity led to a violent confrontation. Hudgen and Cano, both armed, entered Reverdes's apartment at 54 Harrison Street to confront him. A physical altercation broke out, during which Hudgen fired a. 22 caliber revolver, striking Reverdes in the back.
Despite being gravely wounded, Reverdes managed to flee his apartment. He ran to a nearby Dunkin' Donuts, where he collapsed. An employee at the donut shop promptly called for emergency services. Reverdes was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The Pawtucket Police responded to the scene and found multiple shell casings outside the residence and a bullet hole in the wall of Reverdes's apartment.
An extensive investigation into the homicide led law enforcement to identify Trearra Hudgen and Julio Cano as the primary suspects. Following the investigation, Hudgen was apprehended in Hartford, Connecticut, while Cano was located and arrested in Framingham, Massachusetts. Both were charged in connection with the murder of Matthew Reverdes. In June 2018, Julio Cano pleaded guilty to murder and conspiracy charges. Subsequently, in February 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison. Trearra Hudgen's case went to trial, and in November 2018, a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder, among other related charges. In April 2019, she received a sentence of three consecutive life terms for her role in the fatal shooting.
