On a summer evening in Providence, Rhode Island, a neighborhood dispute tragically cut short the life of Mackenzie L. Irons, a 34-year-old Black / African American man. The fatal encounter occurred on July 31, 2017, forever altering the lives of his family and community. Irons, a husband and father, was a man described by those who knew him as a happy, laid-back, and hardworking family man.
The events that led to his death began with an argument.
An altercation broke out between Irons and another man, 61-year-old Howard Watson of Pawtucket. During the initial confrontation, Irons reportedly punched Watson. In response, Watson pulled out a pocket knife, causing Irons to retreat. However, the conflict did not end there. About twenty minutes later, both men returned to the same area, and the dispute escalated with deadly consequences.
In this second encounter, Watson produced a gun and shot Mackenzie Irons. The shooting proved fatal, and Irons succumbed to his injuries. He had previously survived a drive-by shooting more than a decade earlier, but this time, he would not be so fortunate. His death was a profound loss to his wife, children, siblings, and a wide circle of family and friends who mourned the unexpected and violent end to his life.
Following an investigation into the homicide, Howard Watson was arrested and charged in connection with the death of Mackenzie Irons. In September 2019, Watson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 50 years in prison, with 25 of those years to be served. The resolution of the case in the courts brought a measure of justice for the senseless killing that stemmed from a simple neighborhood argument.
