On December 19, 2019, 47-year-old Julie Lynn Cardinal, a mother of four, was fatally shot at the Babcock Village apartment complex in Westerly, Rhode Island. Cardinal, who had recently started working as the office manager at Babcock Village, was among three women shot by 66-year-old resident Joseph Giachello, who subsequently took his own life. The other two victims, Robin Moss, 38, and Donna Thornley, 66, sustained injuries; Moss was in critical condition, while Thornley was stable.
