On March 15, 2009, Deputy Sheriff Chad Lee Mechels, aged 33, was fatally shot while performing a welfare check at a farmhouse west of Marion, South Dakota. Around 9:00 a.m., Deputy Mechels arrived at the residence located at 27477 442nd Avenue to assess the well-being of an individual. Upon his arrival, the occupant, Ethan Johns, shot Deputy Mechels.
