On August 2, 2011, Rapid City Police Officer Nicholas Keegan "Nick" Armstrong, aged 27, was critically injured in the line of duty. While he and fellow officers J. Ryan McCandless and another colleague were questioning four individuals at the intersection of East Anamosa and Greenbriar Streets around 4:30 p.m., a male subject drew a concealed handgun and opened fire, striking all three officers.
