In the summer of 2016, the life of 23-year-old Kiawe Anthony Walker, a White/Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in Rapid City, South Dakota. On the evening of Friday, June 17, 2016, Walker was fatally wounded in a shooting. The incident prompted an immediate investigation by local law enforcement, who worked to piece together the events that led to the young man's untimely death.
In the days following the shooting, the Rapid City Police Department actively sought information from
the public to identify those responsible. The investigation led to the identification of multiple suspects. Authorities began a search for these individuals, releasing their names and descriptions in the hope that community members would come forward with information regarding their whereabouts. The search for the suspects extended beyond the borders of South Dakota, indicating the lengths to which those involved had gone to evade capture.
The efforts of law enforcement ultimately led to the apprehension of at least one of the suspects. Mark Heinen was located and arrested in Colorado. Following his arrest, he faced legal proceedings for his involvement in Kiawe Walker's death. Heinen was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting.
