On May 27, 2017, 42-year-old Marine veteran Christopher E. Janis was fatally shot near Sharps Corner on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Janis, a resident of Vermillion, was reportedly selling prescription hydrocodone pills to fund a birthday trip for his wife. During the transaction, he was approached by Scott Benson, who entered Janis's vehicle to discuss the sale.
