On August 2, 2024, during the Oglala Nation Wacipi and Fair in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, a confrontation occurred at approximately 10:20 PM involving several individuals. During this altercation, 57-year-old Francis Thomas "Tom" Thunder Hawk Sr. was shot multiple times. The suspect fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended while attempting to leave the area in a vehicle.
