In the warm evening air of the Oglala Lakota Nation Wacipi and Fair in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, a beloved member of the community, Francis Thomas “Tom” Thunder Hawk Jr., a 57-year-old male, found himself in the midst of a fatal confrontation. On August 2, 2024, at approximately 10:20 PM, a dispute broke out between several males at the pow wow grounds. Thunder Hawk, a well-known singer and drum keeper, intervened in the altercation. During the confrontation, he was shot multiple times.
