On April 21, 1927, Sheriff Charles M. Cosby of the Albany County Sheriff's Office in Laramie, Wyoming, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a suspect. During the confrontation, the suspect opened fire, striking Sheriff Cosby. A deputy accompanying him returned fire, killing the assailant.
