On December 20, 1983, in Gillette, Wyoming, Patrolman Jon Roy Hardy, aged 26, responded to a residential burglary call on Harder Drive. After checking the house, as he and his partner returned to their patrol car, they were ambushed by Dale Chamberlain, who opened fire with a .223 caliber rifle he had converted to fully automatic. Patrolman Hardy was fatally shot, and his partner was wounded.
