On the night of May 16, 2019, a fatal shooting occurred at the Ryder Star Bar in Ryder, North Dakota. 49-year-old Danial Peterson of Makoti was shot and killed by 32-year-old Thomas Huston, also of Makoti.

The incident, captured on the bar's surveillance video, showed Huston entering the bar and confronting Peterson. A brief physical altercation ensued, after which Huston appeared to leave but then turned and shot Peterson. Huston then left the bar and shot himself outside.
