On a tense summer day in Rolette, North Dakota, the life of James Pochant, a 27-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. On July 31, 2018, Pochant was shot and killed, an event that spiraled into a prolonged and dangerous standoff with law enforcement. The man responsible for his death was identified as 49-year-old Ronald Wayne Wootan, a resident of Rolette.
The incident escalated when Wootan barricaded himself inside his home at 605 3rd Avenue, leading to an eight-hour
standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies, including a SWAT team. During this tense period, Wootan fired shots at a Minot Police Department SWAT vehicle and threatened to kill people. The standoff necessitated the evacuation of neighboring homes to ensure public safety. Ultimately, Wootan was apprehended when he attempted to leave his residence.
Following the standoff, Ronald Wootan faced a litany of charges, including murder for the death of James Pochant. He was also charged with attempted murder for firing at the SWAT vehicle, terrorizing, reckless endangerment, and preventing arrest. Initially, Wootan pleaded not guilty to the murder charge in December 2018. However, in August 2020, he entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter. While in custody, Wootan faced an additional charge for allegedly fashioning a weapon from a razor blade. The court set his bond at $1 million, reflecting the gravity of the offenses.
