In the early morning hours of February 7, 2016, the quiet streets of Enderlin, North Dakota, were shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 28-year-old Billy Holladay. A White male, Holladay was walking home around 2:30 a.m. after dropping off his young nephew. As he made his way through the community, a pickup truck approached, and multiple gunshots rang out, striking him. The vehicle then fled the scene, leaving Holladay fatally wounded.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The community was left in shock as law enforcement began their investigation into the brazen drive-by shooting. The suspect was soon identified as 28-year-old Paul Allen Miller, also from Enderlin. Later that same day, in a surprising turn of events, Miller turned himself in to family members. His relatives then contacted an attorney and drove him to Fargo, where he was taken into custody by authorities.
Miller was subsequently charged with murder, a Class AA felony, and reckless endangerment, a Class C felony. During his initial court appearance, a judge set his bail at $1 million cash, citing the serious nature of the crime and the potential threat to the community. The motive for the shooting was not publicly disclosed, leaving a veil of mystery over the tragic event.
In February 2017, just over a year after Holladay's death, the case came to a resolution. As part of a plea agreement, Paul Miller pleaded guilty to both the murder and reckless endangerment charges. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for the shooting death of Billy Holladay, bringing the legal proceedings to a close, though the questions and sorrow for a life cut short remained.
