Mathew Ward, a 26-year-old White man, lost his life in the early morning hours of July 29, 2022, after a dispute over money in Glen Ullin, North Dakota. The argument escalated into violence, and Mathew was shot. Although emergency services were called, he succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a hospital.
The man responsible for the shooting was 19-year-old Tyler Raines, who was originally from Hague but had recently moved to Glen Ullin.
According to reports, Raines and Mathew were arguing about money when Raines first fired a shot into the ground. He then fired his 22-caliber handgun again, striking Mathew in the left side of his chest.
Following the incident, Raines was arrested. A sheriff's deputy stated that Raines admitted to shooting Mathew. Prosecutors in Morton County initially charged Raines with murder and reckless endangerment. His bail was set at $50,000 cash, and the original murder charge carried a potential maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
The case concluded when Tyler Raines pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of negligent homicide. He was subsequently sentenced to serve two years in prison, which will be followed by three years of probation.
