James Paul Phelps was a 47-year-old Black man from Mountain View, Hawaiʻi, and for days his absence went unanswered, until a worried acquaintance drove out to check on him. On the afternoon of October 11, 2022—shortly after 1:30 p.m.—that person arrived at the Lehua Street property and was met by a foul odor that seemed to seep from inside the residence.
