On December 23, 2023, shortly after 2:15 p.m., Dingie Anthony Dean Martin, a 39-year-old man, was at his home on Koloa Maoli Road in the Hawaiian Acres subdivision in Puna when violence found him in the place that should have been safest—his own driveway. Patrol officers arrived to reports of a shooting and found him on the ground as people around him tried to help, the scene already heavy with the frantic confusion that follows sudden gunfire.
