On July 3, 1895, Sheriff Ed S. McMillan of Brewton, Alabama, met his demise while leading a posse in pursuit of the notorious outlaw known as Railroad Bill. McMillan, who was also deputized as an officer of the law in Florida, had learned that Railroad Bill was hiding in Bluff Springs, Florida. He formed a posse and crossed the state line to capture the fugitive.
