In the winter of 1921, a 45-year-old White/Caucasian man named Don Stephenson met a violent and untimely end in Colbert County, Alabama. A deputy sheriff with the local sheriff's office, Stephenson was engaged in the often-perilous work of prohibition enforcement. On the evening of Saturday, January 22, he and several other officers were conducting a detail related to these duties when the situation escalated dramatically.
