Derrick Eugene Bates, a 37-year-old Black man, had just returned to his home on Oak Drive shortly after 1 a.m. As he got out of his vehicle and walked toward his front door, an assailant who had been lying in wait confronted him in his carport. The hooded figure fired one fatal shot, striking Bates in the head before fleeing the scene.
