In the early hours of March 9, 2017, 37-year-old Derrick Eugene Bates was fatally shot outside his home on Oak Drive in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Shortly after 1 a.m., as Bates exited his vehicle and approached his front door, an assailant confronted him and fired a single, fatal shot. Responding officers discovered Bates lying in his driveway, succumbing to the gunshot wound.
