On June 20, 1955, Chief of Police Dudley Emerson Whiteside, aged 50, was fatally shot in Jacksonville, Alabama, while addressing a dispute over a city water main. City workers had attempted to connect a local grocer's water line to the city's system after the closure of the Profile Mill, which had previously supplied water to the area. The grocer, Robert E.
