Robert Lee Haynes, a 3½-year-old African American male, died on July 7, 1945, under suspicious circumstances while in the care of his maternal grandmother, Nannie Doss, in Jacksonville, Alabama. Haynes was the son of Melvina Braggs, Doss's eldest daughter. At the time of his death, Melvina was visiting her father following a heated argument with Doss.
