On May 11, 1957, at approximately 5 a.m., Chief of Police Henry J. Searcy of Leighton, Alabama, was ambushed and fatally shot. While adjusting his equipment after removing his gun belt, he was attacked by an individual armed with a .44 caliber rifle. Chief Searcy sustained ten gunshot wounds and died almost instantly.
