In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Leighton, Alabama, a dispute between two men escalated into a fatal encounter. Donquis Jamar Brewer, a 32-year-old male, was shot and killed on September 18, 2022, outside of the Stars Nightclub. The man identified as the shooter, Marcus Reshard Andrews, remained at the scene and turned himself over to the authorities, admitting his involvement in the shooting.
The initial investigation led to charges of manslaughter and discharging a firearm
into an occupied vehicle being filed against Andrews. According to investigators, the altercation began as a verbal argument in the nightclub's parking lot. This argument quickly intensified, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between Brewer and Andrews. Tragically, Brewer sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
As the legal proceedings unfolded, a different narrative of the events of that night began to emerge. Andrews claimed that he acted in self-defense. According to court documents, Andrews told investigators that Brewer had threatened his life. He stated that Brewer informed him that he 'had something for him' and then proceeded to his vehicle. Believing that Brewer was retrieving a firearm, Andrews drew his own weapon.
Ultimately, a judge ruled in favor of Andrews's self-defense claim. Based on the evidence presented, the court determined that Andrews's actions were justified under the circumstances. As a result, he was granted immunity from both criminal prosecution and any civil action related to the death of Donquis Jamar Brewer.
