In the warm summer of 1960, a dedicated lawman named Horace C. 'Pot' Hall, a 52-year-old male, served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office in Alabama. With 16 years of service under his belt, Deputy Hall was a seasoned and respected officer, known for his commitment to his community.
On what would be a fateful day, July 20th, Deputy Hall was tasked with the duty of serving commitment papers to a 34-year-old man deemed to be mentally ill.
It was a routine part of his job, one of many such calls he had likely handled over his long career. However, this encounter would tragically be his last. While attempting to carry out his duty, Deputy Hall was suddenly and violently attacked by the very man he was there to help.
In the ensuing struggle, the subject managed to overpower the deputy, seizing his service revolver. With the officer's own weapon in hand, the man opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Hall. The peaceful residential neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunshots, and what began as a routine civil process quickly escalated into a tense and dangerous standoff.
Law enforcement officers swarmed the scene, surrounding the house where the armed man had barricaded himself. For forty minutes, a gun battle raged between the suspect and the assembled officers. The standoff finally came to an end when police deployed teargas, forcing the man out of the residence and into custody.
In the aftermath of the violent encounter, the man responsible for Deputy Hall's death was brought before the justice system. However, he would never stand trial in a traditional sense. He was formally declared insane and was subsequently committed to the Searcy Mental Hospital in Mount Vernon. He remained there for the rest of his life, passing away within the confines of the institution on September 17, 1992.
