On September 2, 1964, Assistant Chief of Police Charles Herman Driggers, Sr., of the Elba Police Department in Alabama, was fatally shot while attempting to serve a peace warrant. Accompanied by a Coffee County Deputy Sheriff, Assistant Chief Driggers approached the residence of the suspect, who unexpectedly opened fire with a shotgun. The attack resulted in the death of Assistant Chief Driggers and injuries to the deputy sheriff.
