On April 11, 1971, Auxiliary Trooper Ormand Franklin Watkins, aged 30, was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Etowah County, Alabama. While addressing a reckless driver on Sibert Road, Watkins and his partner, Trooper Ronald Ogletree, determined that the driver was intoxicated. During the arrest, the suspect overpowered Watkins, seized his service weapon, and shot him. The assailant also shot and wounded Trooper Ogletree, who survived the encounter.
