On October 10, 1997, Captain Peter Christopher "Chris" McCurley of the Etowah County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally shot while executing a drug search warrant at a residence on Briar Cliff Road near the Coosa River. At approximately 11:00 am, as officers approached the home, a couple inside, both wearing body armor, met them at the door.
