On August 18, 1906, Deputy Sheriff Elbert R. Abernathy of the Etowah County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally shot during a raid on a gambling establishment. While attempting to handcuff an offender, the individual drew a handgun and shot Deputy Abernathy. The assailant was subsequently convicted of murder and initially sentenced to death. However, after being granted a new trial, the sentence was reduced to life imprisonment. The offender was released from prison on December 23, 1923.
