In the late summer of 1906, a dedicated lawman in Etowah, Alabama, met a tragic and untimely end. Deputy Sheriff Elbert R. Abernathy, a 39-year-old male, was known for his commitment to upholding the law in his community. His life, however, was cut short on the evening of Saturday, August 18, 1906, during a raid on a local gambling establishment.
