On December 24, 1978, Conservation Officer Frank Johnson Stewart, Jr., aged 42, was fatally shot while performing his duties in a rural area of Alabama. Responding to reports of unauthorized hunting on private property, Officer Stewart encountered three individuals and attempted to issue citations. During this interaction, one of the suspects shot him in the back of the head with a shotgun, resulting in his immediate death.
