On the evening of May 25, 2021, in Montgomery, Alabama, 33-year-old Ronnie Phifer, a male, was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 9:59 p.m. in the 3000 block of Fairwest Place. First responders arrived to find Mr. Phifer with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Ronnie Phifer's death saw an early development with an arrest made in June of
2021. However, the case took a turn the following month when the charges against the suspect were dropped due to the emergence of new evidence. The details of this new evidence have not been publicly disclosed, and the investigation was re-opened as authorities continued to search for those responsible for Mr. Phifer's death. The case remains an open and active homicide investigation.
In the months following the shooting, the Montgomery Police Department identified a person of interest they wished to question in connection with the homicide. This individual was named as Laderrius Calhoun. Authorities revealed that their interest in Mr. Calhoun stemmed from evidence that he had pawned a piece of jewelry belonging to Ronnie Phifer on the day after the murder. The Montgomery Police Department released a photograph of Laderrius Calhoun, described as a 28-year-old Black male, and asked for the public's assistance in locating him.
As the investigation continues, a reward of $2,500 has been offered by Central Alabama CrimeStoppers for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. Law enforcement officials have encouraged anyone with knowledge of the shooting or the whereabouts of Laderrius Calhoun to come forward and contact the Montgomery Police Department or CrimeStoppers. To date, no further arrests have been announced in the ongoing investigation into the death of Ronnie Phifer.
