Lieutenant Coy N. Smith, a 61-year-old enforcement officer with the Alabama Public Service Commission, was killed in the line of duty on June 28, 1994. The incident occurred when Smith stopped a suspect who had earlier committed a series of murders. The suspect had killed Gary Heath, a Greenville, Alabama police officer, and Len Rowell, a Pearl River County, Mississippi sheriff's deputy.
