In the early evening of May 4, 2018, the life of 32-year-old Demarcus Jones, a Black male, was cut short in Montgomery, Alabama. At approximately 6:32 p.m., police and fire medics were dispatched to the 900 block of Goodwyn Drive following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
The tragic event unfolded at a party in the Gibbs Village area, where a group of friends had gathered.
Amidst the socializing, gunshots suddenly rang out, and in the ensuing chaos, Jones was struck by the gunfire. He was unfortunately caught in the crossfire and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His funeral services were later held on May 12, 2018, at the Chapel of Ross-Clayton Funeral Home, and he was laid to rest in Sawyer Cemetery.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Montgomery Police Department launched an investigation that led to the arrest of a suspect, Casey Murphy. Murphy was subsequently charged with the murder of Demarcus Jones. The case proceeded to a three-day trial, during which Murphy pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.
After four years of legal proceedings, a Montgomery jury delivered its verdict on April 5, 2023. Following the trial, Casey Murphy was found not guilty on three pending criminal charges related to the death of Demarcus Jones and was consequently acquitted.
