On October 16, 1994, William Nelson, aged 52, was among five individuals fatally shot during a robbery at the Changing Times Lounge in Birmingham, Alabama. The assailants, Stephen Pilley and Andrew Anthony Apicella, were apprehended, tried separately, and each convicted of murder, receiving death sentences. Pilley died of liver disease in 2009, and Apicella succumbed to the same ailment in 2013.
