Sonya was at the Inland Gas Station on Main Street in Samson when the gunman, identified as 28-year-old Michael Kenneth McLendon, opened fire.
She was fatally wounded in the senseless attack. Prior to this, McLendon had already shot and killed another individual and injured a third person in Samson. The rampage had begun earlier in the neighboring county of Coffee, where he had killed several others.
The violent spree continued even after McLendon left the gas station, as he fired at other businesses and vehicles while driving along Alabama 52.
