In the quiet, heavily wooded landscape near Smith Lake in Crane Hill, Alabama, a day of hunting among family and friends took a tragic turn, ending the life of 37-year-old Thomas Aaron Tucker Jr. The events of that Sunday afternoon, January 26, 2014, unfolded in a secluded area near the Smith Lake RV Resort, a place not easily accessible, where a group of seven had traveled by boat to hunt deer.
Tucker, a male resident of Cullman, was participating in the hunt with others, all clad in hunter's orange for safety. The group was positioned in a heavily wooded area, with Tucker and another hunter on opposite sides of a small ravine. The dense foliage obscured their view of one another. Shortly after 3 p.m., the other hunter spotted a deer in the ravine and fired, successfully hitting the animal. However, a single round of buckshot tragically traveled further, striking Tucker in the stomach.
By the time emergency personnel could navigate the difficult terrain to reach him, Tucker had lost consciousness. He passed away from his injuries at the scene. The individual who fired the fatal shot, a relative of Tucker's through marriage, was overcome with emotional distress and transported to a nearby hospital.
Authorities from the Cullman County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident and ultimately deemed it a 'freak accident.' They determined that no criminal charges would be filed against the shooter. The identity of the shooter was withheld by law enforcement out of respect for the grieving family, who were left torn apart by the devastating accident.
