In the late spring of 2014, on Memorial Day, the life of 38-year-old Casey Anthony Payne was tragically cut short in Anniston, Alabama. Responding to reports of gunfire, police arrived at a residence in the 2200 block of Parkwood Drive to a grim scene. Inside the home, they discovered Payne, who had suffered a fatal shotgun blast to the chest.
The investigation into the shooting quickly progressed as detectives interviewed witnesses and processed forensic evidence at the scene.
Their inquiries led to the arrest of a 46-year-old Anniston woman, Pam DeAnn Smith. Smith was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Payne's death.
Further details suggested a possible motive rooted in a personal relationship. Investigators indicated that Payne, who did not live at the Parkwood Drive address, was apparently involved in a relationship with the homeowner's daughter. Following the initial arrest and charge, law enforcement officials did not release additional information to the public.
