In a quiet corner of Elkmont, Alabama, a dispute over a seemingly small matter escalated into a fatal encounter, claiming the life of 53-year-old Gary Leon Cox. The male victim's life was cut short on February 21, 2015, in a tragedy that law enforcement officials say stemmed from a disagreement with his girlfriend over a dog harness.
The woman, Dawn Doreen Child, who was 49 at the time and operated a dog-grooming and pet-sitting business, reportedly became incensed when Cox did not
follow her instructions to leave a harness on a dog. The argument quickly intensified, leading to a physical altercation where the couple shoved one another. The confrontation took a deadly turn when Child retrieved a handgun and shot Cox three times.
Following the shooting, Child was arrested and charged with murder. She was initially released on a $50,000 bond. However, her freedom was short-lived as the court revoked her bond in July 2017 after she faced a subsequent theft charge, leading to her return to the Limestone County Jail.
The legal proceedings moved forward with a trial date set for September 2017. Prior to the trial, a plea date was scheduled for the end of August, offering the possibility of a guilty plea in exchange for a potentially lighter sentence.
