In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 1, 2008, violence shattered the quiet of a Washington, D.C. neighborhood. Twenty-one-year-old Edward Mitchell was in the 4600 block of Livingston Road SE, when the sound of gunshots pierced the air at approximately 2:40 a.m. Responding to the reports, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department discovered Mitchell suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. Another individual was also a victim of the shooting, sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg. This person was treated at an area hospital for their injuries. Mitchell, a resident of the 800 block of Southern Avenue SE, became one of eight people to die in a particularly violent weekend in the District.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide of Edward Mitchell.
The case was taken on by the department's Criminal Investigation Division Homicide Branch. Authorities have actively sought assistance from the public, urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. Despite these efforts, there have been no reports of any arrests or publicly identified suspects in the case. The investigation into the shooting death of Edward Mitchell remains ongoing.
