On a Tuesday morning in August of 2008, the quiet of a Washington, D.C. neighborhood was broken by a grim discovery. In an alley tucked away in the 1700 block of U Street in the Southeast quadrant of the city, the body of a man was found. He was identified as John Calvin Skinner Jr., a 56-year-old male. The discovery, made at approximately 7:00 a.m. on August 26, 2008, marked the beginning of a long and unresolved homicide investigation.
