In the early morning hours of June 17, 2016, the quiet of a Herbert Street residence in Demopolis, Alabama, was shattered by the sound of a gunshot. When police arrived at approximately 12:32 a.m., they discovered 40-year-old Joseph Shane Goodwin, a White male, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marengo County Coroner.
Goodwin was a well-respected figure in the community, known for his role as the minister of the First Christian Church.
He was also deeply involved in the lives of local youth, serving as an umpire for the youth baseball league and as the director of the supervised alternative placement program for Demopolis City Schools. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many to mourn the loss of a man dedicated to faith and public service.
The investigation into Goodwin's death quickly led authorities across state lines. A juvenile suspect was taken into custody in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The suspect was identified as Goodwin's own son. Following his apprehension, the teenager was extradited back to Marengo County, Alabama, where he was formally charged with murder in connection with his father's shooting death. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to officially determine the exact cause of death.
