On February 9, 2022, 76-year-old Freddie L. Armstead Sr., a long-serving Marengo County Commissioner, died from an accidental gunshot wound at his residence in Demopolis, Alabama. After returning home from a deer hunting trip, Armstead was unloading rifles from his truck when one discharged, inflicting a fatal injury. He was transported to Whitfield Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
