In the early hours of June 10, 2017, the life of 17-year-old Lauren McKenzie Wright, a recent high school graduate, was tragically cut short in Demopolis, Alabama. A White/Caucasian female from Gallion, Alabama, Lauren was visiting friends in the area at the time of her death. Originally from Linden and Selma, she had recently graduated from Fairhope High School and was eagerly preparing to attend culinary school to pursue her dream of becoming a baker.
Just after midnight, at approximately 12:24 a.m., officers from the Demopolis Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Starmont Road following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Lauren suffering from a gunshot wound. She was quickly transported to Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
At the scene, authorities found 19-year-old Dalton Martin Jowers of Demopolis performing CPR on Lauren. Following an investigation into the shooting, Jowers was arrested and charged with her murder. Court documents later revealed that a 9mm firearm was the weapon used in the incident. Jowers was subsequently released from the Marengo County Detention Center after posting a $10,000 bond.
Lauren's sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through her community. Friends and coworkers at Pinzone's Italian Downtown in Fairhope, where she worked and was affectionately known as "Flour Hands," mourned the loss of a young woman they described as having a constant smile and positive energy. The restaurant closed for a period in her honor and held a fundraiser to support her family with funeral expenses. Her loved ones remember her as a strong, compassionate, and confident individual who was wise beyond her years and always willing to help those in need.
