On the afternoon of August 12, 2017, the quiet community of Flomaton, Alabama, was unsettled by the discovery of a double homicide. Inside their mobile home on College Street, 50-year-old Timothy Edward Adams and his 61-year-old wife, Susan Conway Adams, were found deceased. Both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators determined they were last seen alive earlier that morning and believe the murders occurred before noon.
The couple, who were lifelong residents of the Atmore and Flomaton area, were remembered by friends and family. Mr. Adams was an employee at Frit Car Inc. in nearby Brewton.
For more than four years, the case remained a persistent mystery, leaving the small town in a state of unease. Flomaton police, along with several other law enforcement agencies, including the Escambia County Sheriff's Offices in both Alabama and Florida, continued to pursue leads. The investigation revealed that the victims' phones and other personal property had been taken from their home and discarded in two different locations. This dedication to the case eventually led to a significant breakthrough in late 2021.
In November 2021, authorities announced the arrests of three individuals in connection with the murders. Jermaine Lavelle Smith, 35, of Flomaton, Jacqueline Bernice Rolin, 40, of Atmore, and Kenneth Joe Lowery, Jr., 40, of Century, Florida, were each charged with three counts of capital murder. At the time of their arrests, Smith and Rolin were held in the Escambia County, Alabama, Detention Center, while Lowery was incarcerated in Escambia County, Florida, awaiting extradition. Law enforcement officials indicated that the investigation was ongoing but that no further arrests were anticipated.
Following the arrests, the legal process began to move forward. In May 2023, as part of the continuing investigation, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence in Century, Florida. Officers were seen using metal detectors in the backyard of the home, searching for physical evidence related to the murders. Despite their efforts, authorities reported that no evidence was recovered during that specific search. The three suspects remained in jail, awaiting trial for the capital murder charges brought against them.
