Melissa Joy McDonald, a 34-year-old female, was shot and killed on August 30, 2018, while working as a clerk at the Allen Oil gas station on Highway 21 in Sylacauga, Alabama. The incident occurred in the early morning, with a 911 call being placed at 6:07 a.m. reporting that the clerk was bleeding but still breathing. At the time of the shooting, it was reported that only McDonald and the shooter were present in the store.
She was transported to Coosa Valley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Initial reports from the Sylacauga Police Chief indicated that the shooting was not related to a robbery but was due to 'other circumstances.' The investigation into her death continued for nearly a year. Friends and family remembered her as a joyful person who was always smiling and laughing.
In July 2019, an arrest was made in connection with the murder of Melissa Joy McDonald. The Sylacauga Police Department, along with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Tallapoosa County Narcotics Task Force, took 41-year-old Carlos Laundrell Brooks into custody. Brooks, a resident of Alexander City, was apprehended at a relative's home. He has been charged with murder and is being held in the Talladega County Jail without bond. Murder is a Class 'A' Felony, which carries a potential sentence of 10 years to life in prison upon conviction.
